3 Los Angeles Events You Need to Know About

From a two-day hot sauce celebration to a cocktail festival that promises drinks from 30 Los Angeles bars, here are three events you should have on your summer calendar.

California Hot Sauce Expo

Listen up, chile heads, this event is for you. There will be hot sauce from 40 hot sauce makers around the world as well as food vendors. And when the heat gets a little too hot to handle, look for one of the craft beer or specialty cocktail vendors. If you enjoy watching others in chile agony, there’s an area called the Stage of Doom, where the competitions will take place. This year, you can expect the Guinness Book of World Records Reaper Pepper Eating Contest, the Booze & Infuse Cocktail Competition and the Spicy Pizza of Doom contest. Also look out for Lucha Libra wrestling, because when your mouth is on fire, why not cheer on wrestlers in cool masks? There are three tiers of tickets, including $10 general admission, $40 craft brew package tickets and $75 VIP package tickets. Everyone gets access to the hot sauce samples and the eating competitions. The craft brew package includes extras like drink tokens, and the VIP package includes access to a VIP area with complimentary drinks and a BBQ buffet. 2200 E. Katella Ave., Anaheim, cahotsauceexpo.com.

Los Angeles Chocolate Salon

If you’re the sort of person who keeps a not-so-secret chocolate stash, then you’ll want to check out the 11th Los Angeles Chocolate Salon. It’s basically a convention center full of both chocolate and fellow chocolate lovers from around the world, held Oct. 1 in Pasadena. A ticket gets you access to chocolate tastings, demonstrations, and chef and author talks. Some of the participating chocolatiers include Amano, Mignon, Zenbunni, Valenza and David Bacco. And if you’re into edibles, this year, Défoncé Chocolatier, the seed-to-bar company that was started by a former Apple employee, will do a presentation on its chocolate edibles (you must be 21 or older to attend this presentation). Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets for children ages 6 to 12 are $10. The Pasadena Center, 300 E. Green St., Pasadena, www.LAChocolateSalon.com.

3 Los Angeles Networking Events You Need To Know About

In any creative industry networking is key. It’s just a fact that you need to have a wide base of connections to pull from. You need lots of people who are talented and have the ability to help you advance your career. Like the saying goes, “It’s not about what you know, it’s who you know” although, to be 100% truthful–it’s both.

The Sofitel Lounge After The Espy Awards

Want to work in sports as an announcer, camera-op, editor, or production assistant? Connect with Sports Industry pros at this post-ESPY mixer! Started in 1993, The ESPY Award (short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award) is a yearly accolade presented by the American broadcast television network ABC (previously by ESPN) with the aim of recognizing sports-related individual and team athletic achievement. Attend this L.A. mixer and meet athletes, directors, producers, models, and many of the behind-the-scenes professionals who make it happen! Date: July 13, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

AIMP July 16th Luncheon Panel

Want to hear some of the creative movers and shakers behind Disney’s soundtracks and animated films discuss the company’s creative direction? Want to meet new and exciting potential creative collaborators? Well this is the event for you! This one time event at Lawyr’s Prime Rib, which is located at 100 North La Cienega Blvd. (near Wilshire), Beverly Hills 90211, is the type of networking event that only those living in Los Angeles experience. Every city has networking events. Every city tries to foster creative communities, but in Los Angeles things just naturally evolve to the next level. This event will be taking place on July 16th and feature panel guests Kaylin Frank who is the VP Creative, Music & Soundtracks, Walt Disney Music Studios, Tom MacDougall who is the Executive VP, Music, Pixar & Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Chris Montan who is President, Walt Disney Music.

Finding people to collaborate with, create with, and expand your creative endeavors with is hard but definitely not impossible. The trick is getting out there and putting yourself out there! Finding people who are on the same plane (or a similar one) and who want to team up requires talking, being your charming self and meeting just as many creative heads as possible. Some artforms you can do by yourself. Some you can’t. If you’re a filmmaker, you need collaborators. If you’re a musician, you probably want other musicians to play with or to record. No time is better than the present so know what you want but stay open to opportunity. Offer to make that EPK or record that fresh-faced vocalist. Build that portfolio and those connections.

Going to meet ups, networking events, and film screenings is how you find likeminded individuals who, like you, are committed enough to get out there and pound the pavement. Focus on building relationships based on respect and integrity. Do good work. Repeat.

Going to meet ups, networking events, and film screenings is how you find likeminded individuals who, like you, are committed enough to get out there and pound the pavement. Focus on building relationships based on respect and integrity. Do good work. Repeat.
